TEAM EFFORT YIELDS WELL EARNED SMILES

THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT THAT CRAZY LETTER 'L' WITH THE FC VICTORIA STARS
For the second consecutive week, midfielder Cassie Lyall and striker Meghan Lee found the back netting for the FC Victoria Stars u21 Women's soccer team in Pacific Coast Soccer League action. Fiona Lawson also contributed for a goal of her own running the streak to seven straight goals scored by players with the last name beginning with 'L'. You have to go back to June 16th before finding a goal scorer (Sandy Kennedy) with a last name not influenced by the lucky letter, though 'K' is relatively an outstanding neighbour to 'L'.

Coach Dave Dew's charges played an energetic skilled game versus the North Shore Selects at Victoria's Hampton Park and were full credit for their 3-0 shutout victory versus the mainland club. The victory moves the locals into the middle of the standings leap-frogging Semiahmoo in the process.

TRIPLE 'L' SUCCESS IN SEMIAHMOO

LARGE, LEE & LYALL CONVERT FOR SCORES IN 4-0 VICTORY

South Surrey's Athletic Park hosted PCSL u21 Women's competition yesterday between Semiahmoo SC and FC Victoria Stars. The cloud cover kept the weather conditions perfect for competition as both teams had short benches coming into the match.

FC Victoria Stars head coach, David Dew reminded his charges of the last effort versus Semiahmoo where a goal netted in the opening minute bookended by a late goal allowed Semiahmoo to steal a victory early in the season in Victoria. The girls executed their game plan and were rarely contested in a solid 4-0 victory.

Striker Megan Lee opened the scoring in the 9th minute when defender Kendra Brown cleared a ball deep in her defensive end to speedy midfielder, Cassie Lyall who found the striker making a run through the Semiahmoo defenders. Lee made an excellent first touch into space and found herself alone on the Semiahmoo keeper, Lea Betsworth. Lee made no mistake and netted the ball for the score. Lyall would net one in the 35th minute, again on a breakaway when she was sent clear from an excellent individual play by central defender Katie Lawrence.

CARR & REID SCORE TWO GOALS EACH IN VICTORY VERSUS NORTH SHORE STARS
It has taken three weeks and five games into their inaugural season for the FC Victoria u21 Stars to earn league points and it was done in explosive fashion as they scored frequently in a 6-1 victory versus the North Shore Girls Soccer Club u21 Stars at Victoria's Hampton Park.

The midfield team was on fire early with great support on both sides of the ball. Megan Reid connected on 20 yarder from a tight crowd that found the netting along the near post in the 23rd minute that set the wheels in motion. Jessica Freeman scored a solid conversion in the 36th minute from the same left hand side. Meghan Reid would find the net again six minutes later from her central midfield position on a 30 yarder that soared over the outstretched keepers hands. A minute later, Alison Carr made it 4-0 with her team leading third goal on the season. She would also find the net again in the 82nd minute to give her a league leading four goals on the season. Kristyn Large completed the scoring in the 86th minute when she converted a Meghan Lee blast that ricocheted off the right hand post. North Shore scored in the 78th minute, a left footed marker by Krista Caldwell.

BOOKEND GOALS SINKS STARS

SEMIAHMOO NETS WINNER IN 87th MINUTE
The Victoria Day Weekend did not prove kind to the FC Victoria Stars as they conceded their second defeat in consecutive days at the rain sogged Hampton Park earlier today. The maroon clad visitors from Semiahmoo SC took advantage of the two gifts presented upon them today to edge away with the 2-1 victory.

Standing water on the field turf early in the match was a factor for the opening goal as a layback pass to the last defender stopped dead in the water. Emily Hubbard of Semiahmoo used her size and speed to force the gift at the charging FC Victoria Stars keeper, Stephanie Parker. Parker bravely made the original save, however the rebound came straight back to Hubbard as she surely placed the ball to the back netting 90 seconds into the match.

FRASER VALLEY SPOILS HOME DEBUT FOR U21 WOMENS
Gusty wind, rain and sunshine were in the mix today at Hampton Park for the home debut of FC Victoria Stars versus the Fraser Valley Action. Both teams competed in a physical battle with the visitors from the Lower Mainland wearing out a depleted Stars side and running away with a hard fought 3-0 victory.

Both teams played battles of the midfield in the opening minutes without domination by either team. Fraser Valley's Taryn MacDougall snuck in on the left side in the 8th minute and rang a shot off the near post. The ensuing rebound found the foot of  dangerous midfielder, Karina Whitmarsh who  sent the ball to the back of the net. The referees assistant had Whitmarsh flagged for the offside. Whitmarsh had been in an offside position on the MacDougall strike, but the flag was not raised until the score was made. A rare and excellent read by the official.

PINNACLES STEAL AWAY VICTORY IN DYING MINUTES
FC Victoria ushered in a new era this past Sunday as their entry in the Pacific Coast League’s u21 Women’s division, the FC Victoria Stars, competed in their inaugural game versus the Penticton Pinnacles in the sleepy Okanagan city. The Mother’s Day clash entertained a crowd of 100+ at King’s Park, with the hosts sneaking in two late markers in the final seven minutes to steal away a 2-1 victory.

Things heated up early as the sun broke through the cloud cover at kick off. Both teams tested each other hoping to get an early lead and build momentum. FC Victoria’s Alison Carr, a graduate of FC Victoria’s youth academy netted the first goal of the game in the 15th minute. She finished a powerful cross from striker Meghan Lee on the left side and sent the ball back through the six yard box into the back netting.
